- In Japanese tradiotion, the red spider lily is associated with death, the afterlife, and the impermanence of life. This relates to Hinako because it symbolizes her running away from her "death", which in this case represents the arranged marriage.
- When the glowing monster grabs Hinako, it starts licking her and displays an overwhelming hunger that seems to represent lust. It never targets men, only women. It walks around on all fours and, upon dying, makes a dog-like sound, which could imply that Hinako sees most men as dirty dogs.
- In the "Letter from the Hospital" it is stated that Sakuko shows characteristics of mild autism.
- The red pills Shu gives Hinako at the beginning is actually laced with hallucinogenic plans that cause her hallucinations and a psychotic break.
